The American Sambo Association is a division of American Sambo, LLC

© 2003-2014 American Sambo, LLC. All rights reserved.

American Sambo Association National Sambo Rankings are compiled in an ongoing fashion and are not renewed annually. They are based solely on national (US & Canada) Sambo tournament results. Players can also earn points by placing in international Sambo events. However, internationally earned points are specifically intended for assessing the ASA Master Sportsman Rating (see below).

As players 18 and above continue to compete they will earn points under the guidelines printed below. This national ranking system is designed to encourage consistent competition by athletes in Sport, Freestyle, and Combat Sambo competitions in the US & Canada. Players who continually compete and place will earn points and surpass those who do not. Because of this, rankings do not need to be renewed each year. Those who do not continue to compete and earn points will drop lower the rankings over time.

National and International Points are awarded via the following guidelines:

National (US & Canada) Sport, Freestyle, or Combat Sambo tournament medallists will be awarded points based on place finish in their respective divisions. In the event of a three person division, only gold and silver will earn rank points. In the event of a two person division, only gold will earn rank points if there is only one match to contest the division. If there is a best of three matches rule, the second place winner must win a match to earn silver medal points. You must have a victory on the mat to earn points.

Gold - 3 points

Silver - 2 points

Bronze - 1 point

International (regional and national championships) Sport, Freestyle, or Combat Sambo tournament medallists will be awarded points based on place finish in their respective divisions.

International (continental, World Stage Cup events, and World Championships) Sport, Freestyle, or Combat Sambo tournament medallists will be awarded points based on place finish in their respective divisions. In the event of a three person division, only gold and silver will earn rank points. In the event of a two person division, only gold will earn rank points if there is only one match to contest the division. Starting in 2010, the ASA began including the FIAS/AASF US Open in our rankings. In 2014, USA Sambo, Inc. And SomboJoe tournament results have also been included. We will include other known Sambo events where possible. However, if you host Sambo events and wish for your results to be included in the ASA Rankings, please take note of the following information:

1) You do not need to be an ASA member

2) You must submit your rules to the ASA for review prior to the event so we may establish the validity of your Sport, Freestyle or Combat Sambo event.

3) Upon completion of your event, you must submit a complete place listing for all divisions.

4) Ranking points will be awarded to athletes in accordance with our ranking system listed here.

ASA Master Sportsman  and Master Sportsman International Class Ratings

The ASA will recognize any US or Canadian Sambist who acquires and demonstrates a high level of skill in Sambo through competitive efforts in Sport, Freestyle, and Combat Sambo national or international tournaments. All North American events are considered national events.  2010 is the beginning year for international point accumulation.

To be recognized as an “Master Sportsman” a male Sambist must acquire a minimum of 30 points in accordance the ASA ranking system stated above. Female Sambists must acquire a minimum of 20 points.

To be recognized as an “Master Sportsman International Class” a male and female Sambists must within their total points acquire a minimum of 12 internationally earned points in accordance the ASA ranking system stated above.

ASA “Master Sportsman”  and “Master Sportsman International Class” ratings are not mutually dependent. In other words, you may receive your “Master Sportsman International Class” award prior to your “Master Sportsman” rating. For example, once a male athlete accumulates 30 points total (20 for female athletes), he will be granted a rating. If 12 of his accumulated 30 points are from international events, he will earn an “Master Sportsman International Class” rating. If less than 12 of his total 30 points are from international events he will receive “Master Sportsman.” Once receiving any one rating, an athlete is still eligible for the other once the proper points are accumulated.

This system will assure that any award recipient will have actively competed AND placed in competition for several years – demonstrating continued and recognized skill in Sambo.

Good luck to all our Sambists!
